and time we depart depend on the distance we have to travel. It is for riders who want to gain experience by going to other tracks, but do not have dependable transportation or a team caravan to get them there. Contact: Kelli Townsend 757-768-4629 or Jeannie Barke 757-880-0399.

Hampton BMX, formerly Hampton Supertrack, has been located in Gosnold’s Hope Park for over 30 years. Our goal is to provide riders, their families and friends a safe place to come together to share their passion for the sport of BMX racing.

Our licensing body is USABMX, formerly the American Bicycle Association (ABA). We offer a “One Day Free” membership so riders can experience one free gate practice or one free race. A 12-month membership is $45 for the first family member. This membership allows you to race at any USABMX track in the United States.  You will receive Pull Magazine, a BMX magazine, that gives great information about equipment, riders, races and tracks. There is also a temporary membership that can be purchased for $25 for 30 days.  The temporary membership can then be converted to a full membership for $25.

History & Structure of BMX

BMX is Bicycle Motocross. It was started in California in the early 1970’s by some kids who wanted to emulate motorcycle motocross racing. There are now hundreds of tracks across the country and around the world.  In addition, BMX racing made its debut as a full medal sport in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games!

BMX race tracks are usually around 1000 feet long with an elevated starting hill. They consist of jumps and banked turns called “berms.” Most of the track is dirt, but the berms on some of the tracks are paved.

Each race consists of three qualifying races called motos, followed by the main event. The overall winner for the day is determined by their finish in the main event and points are awarded for each finishing position. Over the season, your points are accumulated and your point total determines where you place amongst other riders in your district each season.

There are three levels of proficiency in the amateur ranks, novice (beginner), intermediate, & expert. The riders are grouped for a race by their age and proficiency level or “class.”  At least three (3) riders are needed to make up a class.  If there are not enough riders to make a class, the Motomaker Software will group riders together by first going up in age, no more than three (3) years.  If no rider was found, the software will move up to the next proficiency level.  Example: There are two, 13 Novice riders and one 14 Intermediate rider.  The software would group these 3 riders together as a 14 Intermediate class.

A novice rider would move up in proficiency to intermediate either after winning eight (8) races as a novice or voluntarily if they wish to race at the next level.  After winning twenty-five (25) races as an intermediate, a rider moves up to the expert level.
